Salam ;)
I recalled a general assembly meeting held by MSA (Muslim Student Association)right here at Penn State weeks ago. Many muslims came, but the only Malay there were me and hamizah. The topic of the discussion that night was the infamous topic of hijab. Should Hijab be enforced on women? or something like that..
For the first time I got to hear the opinions of Muslims Americans. The discussion started off with a girl giving her opinion on why should just hijab be enforced? If the government wants to enforce hijab, they should enforce the rules for men also. Meaning, men are not allowed to wear short pants above their thigh in public. She felt that both men and women should cover up themselves because both gender have feelings towards each other, not just men. It is unfair to just enforce the law upon women only. I agreed to this. (like, duhh, mestilah agree ;p)
Another girl spoke up, she stated that, Islam does not force its people to do something they aren't willing to do. She said that she was not ready. And you cannot judge a person by hijab. Probably those who wear hijab, are not as good or saintly as they seem, sometimes, those who wear hijab, dont even pray five times a day, but as for her, who happens not to wear a hijab, pray five times a day, fast during ramadhan and so on. You cannot say that those who dont wear hijabs are not muslims. Hijab is not the measure of one's "islamness". - this girl, clearly had her mind set.
And I remembered one guy said, everything that is stated in the quran and sunnah must be obeyed. there is no such thing as shades of grey in the quran, there is only black and white, and even if there are any shades of grey, that is the use of the sunnah, hadeeth. to clear things up, so you cant find an excuse to say or to avoid any rulings of islam.
My personal opinion, no offense to anyone, just my honest opinion- I dont accept excuses such as they are not ready, and Islam does not force its people. Call me hardcore, whatever. Sure, I agree that Islam cannot be forced upon someone, its the acceptance of Islam itself that cant be forced. Not the rulings of Islam once you have accepted it. Get what I mean? once you have accepted Islam to be the religion of your life, it is your responsibility to try and obey everything that is asked of or set by your religion. Accepting Islam means that you accept everything there is to it. No questions asked. I know, I break the rules sometimes, all the time probably, but I am trying. And so should you. About the famous excuse of not being ready. ahh, classic. The saying that they haven't gotten the hidayah to wear a hijab. Until when are you going to wait? Until you're 60? 70?. What if you dont make it to 60 or 70. What if your time is tomorrow, and your hidayah hasn't reached you yet. are you going to put the blame on that? You cannot be sure until when you will live.
but then again, this is just my opinion, i am no scholar or anything, i didnt mean for it to hurt anyone in particular. just a thought that i longed to express.
toodless :)
